Frisco Neighborhood Watch Meeting

I would like to invite each of you to attend the upcoming Frisco Neighborhood Watch meeting held here at the Frisco Police Department on Monday, February 28th, at 7:00 PM.

The topics for this month’s meeting include crime statistics, the police department volunteer programs, and detailed information on how to start a neighborhood watch program in your neighborhood.

Frisco Neighborhood Watch is a citywide, community-based crime prevention initiative that educates citizens in ways of reducing the risk of being a victim of crime, both at home and in the public. Citizens are trained to recognize and report suspicious activities and how to make their homes more secure. Frisco Neighborhood Watch is based on the premise of neighbors getting to know each other and passing on crime related/crime prevention information. Frisco Neighborhood Watch members receive valuable information concerning local crime related incidents, crime trends and local events via an e-mail network.

Frisco Neighborhood Watch is directed by a Steering Committee whose members work directly with the Frisco Police Department, Homeowners Associations and other organizations throughout Frisco. District Coordinators oversee Neighborhood Watch efforts in a specific area (such as a subdivision or apartment community) and Block Captains (or Building Captains in apartment communities) distribute information directly to the residents in their immediate block/building. Many members of Frisco Neighborhood Watch are also graduates of the Frisco Citizens’ Police Academy (CPA) and members of the Frisco Citizens’ Police Academy Alumni Association (FCPAAA) and Citizens on Patrol (COPS).

Neighborhood Watch instills a greater sense of security, well being and sense of community. Some other benefits of Neighborhood Watch include:

  • Reducing the risk of being a crime victim.
  • Being better prepared to respond to a suspicious activity.
  • Greater access to information related to criminal activity.
  • Receiving a Neighborhood Watch sign.
  • Knowing your neighbors.
  • Reducing the fear of crime and making a neighborhood more livable.
  • Allowing an avenue to address other issues of concern within a community.

Frisco Neighborhood Watch meetings are currently being held on the fourth Monday of each month at the Frisco Police Department (7200 Stonebrook Parkway) and are open to anyone wishing to attend. Guest speakers address various crime-related issues and residents may voice their questions/concerns as well. Other Neighborhood Watch related meetings are held locally through Block Captains, District Coordinators and Homeowners Associations.

For more information on Frisco Neighborhood Watch, please visit their website at www.frisconeighborhoodwatch.com.

I look forward to seeing you at the meeting and feel free to contact me should you have any questions or if I can be of further assistance.

How to of the Day
How to Travel With One Bag
In this age of airline fare wars, spiking fuel costs, and the ongoing recession, traveling with bags in tow has started to require a PhD in packing lightly, as airlines pass their cost-cutting measures onto the flying consumer. Combined with the horror stories of lost luggage that never made it to the baggage claim, the option of traveling with just one bag is becoming more and more attractive. Unless your trip is highly specialized, or requires carrying certain items, it is possible to travel and even live indefinitely out of one bag. Here's how.

How to Solve a Linear Diophantine Equation
A Diophantine equation is an algebraic equation with the additional restriction that we are only concerned with solutions in which the variables are integers. In general, Diophantine equations are very difficult to solve and there are many approaches. (Fermat's Last Theorem is a famous Diophantine equation that sat unsolved for over 350 years.) However, linear Diophantine equations of the form ax + by = c can be solved relatively easily by the algorithm described here. By using this method, we can find (4,7) as the only solution in positive integers to 31x + 8y = 180. Division in modular arithmetic can also be expressed as a linear Diophantine equation. For example, 12/7 (mod 18) asks for the solution to 7x = 12 (mod 18) and can be rewritten as 7x = 12 + 18y or 7x - 18y = 12. While some of the diophantine equations are extremely difficult to solve, you can give this one a try.
